Jesse Crawford;

Een echt Fenoméén uit de "begin-tijd"

Zoals  Ethel smith één van de organisten was, die het merk "Hammond"op de kaart zette,
was het Jesse Crawford, die het fenomeen Leslie op de kaart zette;
zozéér zelfs, dat Donald Leslie zijn Leslie-boxen in het begin zelfs "Crawford-Speakers"noemde!
Maar we beginnen bij het begin.

De vroege jaren:

Crawford's vader stierf toen hij één jaar oud was ,een arme vrouw en moeder achterlatend; de baby werd in een weeshuis geplaatst  in de buurt van Woodland,Californië.
Hij leerde zichzelf daar muziek .Op negenjarige leeftijd speelde hij reeds cornet in de weeshuisband. Op 14-jarige leeftijd verliet het weeshuis om in een klein dansorkest piano te spelen, en nam daarna 10-cent baan in een "stomme Filmhuis"
( waar geluidsloze films gedraaid werden)

Zijn eerste theaterorgel-ervaring was in Washington's Spokane Gem Theater in 1911 en in het Clemmer-Casino Theatre (op een acht-rank Estey orgel).(hieronder)




Hij speelde vervolgens kort op theaterorgels in Billings (Montana), Spokane, Washington en Seattle. Toen hij Oliver Wallace ontmoette,( hieronder)


leerde Jesse van hem veel fijne kneepjes en mooie theater-orgel-registraties. In volgende baantjes speelde Crawford in o.a. het  "Strand" in San Francisco (hieronder)




en in het "Mission-Theater" in Los Angeles...( hieronder)


gedurende de jaren 20 als "stomme film organist" ( néé, de Fílm was stom)

In de jaren 1920, begon Jesse met de vorming van een fan club,en werd "De dichter van het orgel"genoemd,voor de manier, waarop hij in Chicago zijn ballads speelde.

In 1921 was hij werkzaam bij de Balaban en Katz -Theater keten,op het   29-rank Wurlitzer orgel (hieronder)



Evenzo werd Crawford ingehuurd om te spelen op het grote Wurlitzer orgel in Grauman's "Million Dollar Theater" in Los Angeles.( hieronder)



Van 1926 tot 1933, trad hij op in New York City Paramount Theater,(hieronder)

waar hij later ook optredens verzorgde met zijn vrouw Helen:

dieduidelijk niet onverdienstelijk orgel speelde !

Dit samenspelen deden ze op het zogenaamde "Twin Organ"; na best lang zoeken vond ik eindelijk dit instrument; het waren Twee Hammonds, samengevoegd in één meubel;
Hier onder zijn ze samen live te zien en te horen  op  15 April 1939 op het Twin-Organ !
( Het schijnt, dat ,omwille van het transport de twee BC's er vanaf de zijkanten in,- en uit-geschoven konden worden)

Hieronder luisterd Jesse naar een radiouitzending, wellicht een optreden van zijn vrouw:

Na enkele opnames voor het kleine lokale Autograph Records label maakte Crawford een serie van grammofoonplaten voor het label Victor Rcords welke  zeer populair was onder grammofoonplatenkopers. Hij had hits zoals "Rose Marie", "Valencia" en "Russische Lullaby". Andere populaire liedjes opgenomen "At Dawning" en "Roses of Picardy".

 jaren 1930: Hammond-organist

Met het einde van de stomme film tijdperk, was werk voor theater organisten in film-huizen opgedroogd. Crawford demonstreerde nog een  Kilgen orgel op de  World's Fair in 1934, en in 1936 kreeg hij een baan als vaste organist in NBC Studio's in Chicago. In de jaren 1930, stapte Crawford helemaal over op het Hammondorgel, en optredens in de Verenigde Staten.

Daarnaast zijn talrijke geluidsopnames van  Crawford geregistreerd op player-rollen op het Wurlitzer "papier-rollen" systeem,o.a. zijn eigen composities  "Wiener violins ", "Louisiana Nocturn", "Harlem Holiday" en "Hawaiian Honeymoon".

Z'n opleiding en verdere studie:

In 1940 maakte de autodidact Crawford zijn eerste formele muziek studie bij Joseph Schillinger, waarbijn de andere studenten George Gershwin, Benny Goodman, Glenn Miller en film score componisten Leith Stevens en Nathan Van Cleave waren. Hij nam Hammond orgel LPs op voor Decca Records en ging bladmuziek ,songs, en registratie-handleidingen schrijven .

Hij onderwees ook orgel studenten, zowel in privé-lessen als in klassikale lessen.

Zijn laatste  twee LPs nam hij op, op de Simonton Wurlitzer:
(hieronder Dick Simonton, Bill Bunch en rechts  Farny Wurlitzer)

En hier dan de enorme Simonton Wurlitzer:

 Jesse deed ook een aantal promo's voor Hammond,waaronder een voor het net nieuwe Chord-Organ
Luister eens goed naar de begeleiding; die werd dus met ( "éénvinger")  knoppen gedaan, stel je voor, dan moet je wel een mééster zijn !

Tot slot nog even het verhaal achter de "CRAWFORD SPEAKER"

"Leslie Speakers" heetten dus niet altijd "Leslie Speakers"
De oorspronkelijke naam van de Leslie Speaker was "Vibratone." Leslie speakers werden ook wel 'Brittain Speakers" genoemd
In 1941 vormde Don Leslie een rampzalig partnerschap met ene "Lou Brittain" eigenlijk Lou Brittena ; de vroege naamplaatjes droegen dan ook ter identificatie van de fabrikant: "Brittain Sound Accuipment. Co." Dit partnerschap werd na de oorlog opgeheven. Leslies waren ook bekend als "Hollywood speakers" (ze werden gebouwd in Californië in de buurt van Hollywood), en 'Crawford speakers' (organist Jesse Crawford was de éérste Leslie- distributeur in de regio New York).

In 1946, werd de naam opnieuw gewijzigd tot "Leslie Vibratone"  Echter, de meeste mensen noemden ze "Leslies", en in 1949, zag Don Leslie af van de naam  "Vibratone."
